This mosiac-like abstract painting of hydrangeas by Alma Thomas reveals her keen powers of observation and interest in natural phenomena. Thomas was the first female graduate of Howard University’s art department in 1924 and went on to teach art in a Washington DC junior high school for the next thirty-six years.
